Ever since our parents passed away, I’ve been my sister Lizzie’s main support. She survived the car accident that took their lives, and I’d do anything for her. However, my girlfriend Lora had hidden feelings about our relationship.
On a snowy evening, a truck hit my family’s car, killing my parents and severely burning Lizzie. I rushed home from college to care for her, pausing my studies. Eventually, I adopted her, and despite our struggles, she thrived in high school.
I met Lora two years ago at a coffee shop. We bonded over our similar losses, and our relationship grew quickly. Lora, also caring for her younger brother Brandon, seemed perfect. When she lost her job, I helped her financially and even paid for Brandon’s college fees.
For a while, everything seemed fine. However, one night during a video call, I overheard Lora and Brandon mocking Lizzie. “Why didn’t he put her up for adoption?” and “I’ll dump him as soon as he pays for your studies,” they sneered.
Enraged, I confronted them, canceled Brandon’s tuition payments, and cut ties with Lora. Lizzie deserved better, and I realized I’d been supporting ungrateful people. Now, I focus solely on Lizzie’s promising future.
