rchitects in northeast Italy uncovered a Roman mosaic beneath a vineyard near Verona. Discovered decades after the ruins of an ancient villa were found at the same site, the intricate flooring is believed to be a part of the previously discovered structure.
Dating back to the 3rd century AD, experts are carefully planning the excavation process. The Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape of Verona is collaborating with property owners and the municipality to determine how to make the archaeological treasure accessible.
The Roman villa’s flooring and foundations were identified north of the capital over a century ago. Although the excavation work began in 1922, it paused due to the pandemic, only resuming recently. The rediscovery sparked excitement and plans for preservation.
Archaeologist Myko Clelland’s tweet about the find has since gone viral, drawing attention to the historical richness beneath the Italian vineyard.
