In our house, Dad was the king, and Mom was his servant, leaving my brother Josh and me feeling like ghosts. This was our life until Josh and I decided to teach Dad a lesson.
One evening, as Dad came home, he barely acknowledged us, demanding, “Mariam! Where’s my dinner?” Mom, exhausted, rushed to fulfill his demands while Dad settled on the couch with his video game, ignoring us completely.
Frustrated, I told Josh, “We need to do something about Dad. He treats Mom like she’s just here to serve him.” We hatched a plan to switch roles and show him how it felt.
The next day, dressed in Dad’s clothes, Josh and I mimicked his demanding tone. When Dad walked in, he was confused, “What’s going on here?”
I confronted him, “This is how you treat us and Mom.” Overwhelmed, Dad realized his mistakes. He apologized, cooked dinner, and even offered to help with homework.
For the first time in years, we felt like a family again.
