In 2013, Chris Salvatore became neighbors with 85-year-old Norma Cook and her cat, Hermes. Over time, their friendly exchanges developed into a deep friendship. When Norma’s health deteriorated to a point where she required constant care, Salvatore, a 31-year-old actor, made a remarkable decision: he invited Norma to move in with him.
Norma’s declining health led to a hospital stay, and it became evident that she couldn’t return home without continuous assistance. With no immediate family or children to rely on, Norma faced a daunting predicament. Salvatore initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support her, but after trying a few caretakers, he realized he needed to do more.
“The only other option was for her to go into a facility,” Salvatore explained, “I just couldn’t do that to someone who is like my own grandmother.” So, he opened his apartment to Norma, ensuring she could spend her final days at home with her friend and beloved cat.
Norma and Salvatore proved to be excellent roommates, spending their time together watching the news, chatting, savoring champagne, and snacking on peanuts. Tragically, on February 15, 2017, Norma passed away. Salvatore shared this heartbreaking news on Instagram, where he often chronicled their adventures.
In reflecting on their unique bond, Salvatore remarked, “She called me the grandson she never had.” Despite not being obligated to help Norma, Salvatore’s compassion led him to ensure she didn’t spend her last days in a hospital, alone and without love.
