Due to financial troubles, Margo and Robert move into Margo’s late grandmother’s old house. They find the house unexpectedly well-maintained, which makes Margo uneasy. Strange occurrences, such as footsteps and missing food, start happening.
“Margo, did you hear that?” she asked, her voice tense.
“No, I was awake. I’m sure I heard something,” Margo insisted, her heart pounding.
One night, Margo discovers the basement is locked from the inside. The next day, after more food goes missing, she unlocks the basement and finds two children, Mark and Olive, living there. Their parents had abandoned them, and Margo’s grandmother had taken them in.
“Please, Margo, don’t let them take us!” they cried.
Despite their own financial struggles, Margo wants to keep the children. Robert insists they involve the authorities, leading to the children being taken away. This deeply upsets Margo.
Determined, Margo paints a piece titled “Survival” and sells it for a good sum. This encourages Robert to agree to take the children back. They become Mark and Olive’s guardians, finally creating the family they always wanted.
“Let’s do it,” Robert said, smiling.
When the children return, they are overjoyed, and Margo and Robert feel fulfilled, their family now complete.
