Tennis sensation Coco Gauff under fire for praying after winning U.S. Open

Coco Gauff, at just 19, made history by winning the US Open, following in the footsteps of Serena Williams, who achieved this feat in 2001. Her unexpected triumph over Aryna Sabalenka catapulted her to global stardom, marking her first Grand Slam victory after just two prior final appearances.

However, it was her post-win actions that stirred controversy. Gauff’s viral video showed her in a prayerful moment, which ESPN initially described as “soaking it all in.” Tony Dungy, a Super Bowl champion coach, corrected this interpretation, highlighting Gauff’s open Christian faith.

While some praised her faith, others took offense, questioning whether prayer influenced outcomes or if divine interest in sports was trivial compared to global events like earthquakes.

Gauff remained unfazed by the criticism, crediting her parents and faith for her perseverance, even addressing those who doubted her, stating, “you were really adding gas to it – and now I’m really burning so bright.”

Despite detractors, many celebrated her victory, comparing her to Serena Williams, and wished her future success. Coco Gauff, at only 19, has achieved remarkable success, leaving us eager to witness her future accomplishments.
